Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that affects a person’s memory and behavior. The effects of Alzheimer’s get worse as the disease progresses, and unfortunately, there is no current cure.
While technology cannot cure the disease, it does have benefits that can help Alzheimer’s patients continue living their life. People suffering from severe Alzheimer’s will need constant care, but technology will alleviate some of the burden experienced by those whose symptoms are not as threatening or who are still in the early stage of the disease.
Electronic Calendars
Electronic calendars can help Alzheimer’s patients remember important information. They can put in special dates and events, such as birthdays, anniversaries or upcoming parties, or they can even set up a daily reminder to take their medication or to do everyday tasks, such as get the mail, feed the dog and take out the garbage.
By using an electronic calendar, Alzheimer’s patients can continue to do their normal routine without being constantly monitored by a member of their family or needing someone to do these tasks for them.
GPS Shoes
Technology has given us some interesting creations, with one of those creations being shoes that contain GPS tracking software inside them. Some people who suffer from Alzheimer’s tend to wander off, leaving family frantically trying to locate them. With GPS shoes, a wandering family member can be easily located, and having this technology available allows other friends and family members to relax.
Cell Phones
Cell phones can also be beneficial to those suffering from Alzheimer’s. Most mobile phones today come with a GPS tracking option. If this option is set up on an Alzheimer’s patient’s phone, it will keep track of their location at all times. Since they tend to wander, this is great for their friends and family.
Cell phones can also contain their basic information, such as their name, phone number and address. This way, they can be reminded of who they are and where they live in case they have an episode.
Online Puzzles
From crossword puzzles to Sudoku, puzzles are known to increase brain function and improve memory. While playing online games will not keep the disease from spreading, it can help slow its progression. Even a slight improvement in memory can help keep an Alzheimer’s patient functioning better than expected.
Social Connections
When an Alzheimer’s patient is diagnosed, they may be forced to limit their outside activities without supervision. This can put a damper on their social life, which could increase depression. We all need social connection to stay happy, and this remains true for Alzheimer’s sufferers. Using technology to stay connected with friends and family will keep them social and improve their demeanor. They can use their computer or maybe even a tablet to access email, use video chat or even join a social networking community. All of these options will allow them to keep in touch with friends and family and avoid isolation.
Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease for both its patients and their friends and family. Though there is currently no cure, and though it will not stop the disease from developing, technology can help keep patients happy and safe and improve their overall functionality.
